Coco Chanel

Designer Coco Chanel was born Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel on August 19, 1883 in Saumur France.  She was raised in an orphanage where she learned how to sew and developed her love for fashion; especially hats.  Her nickname Coco came from her brief career as a singer; some say it was short for ‘cocotte’ (French for kept woman).  At the age of 20, Coco started a millinery business with the help of her lover Etienne Balsan.  Soon after Coco left Balsan for his wealthier friend Arthur “Boy” Capel who helped her open her first shop in Paris where she started out selling hats.  She went on to eventually add more stores and selling designing clothing where her first success came from creating a dress out of jersey.  By the 1920’s her business had expanded to include her own couture house, textile factory and a line of perfumes that included the famous Chanel No. 5.  She would eventually go on to introduce the Chanel suit with the famous collarless jacket and fitted skirt.  At the time, her designs were revolutionary giving way to less constraining garments for more comfort.  She also was the first to introduce black as a fashion color and is known to this day for her “little black dress”.  Although her popularity waned after World War II, she made a comeback in 1954 and her designs became popular world wide.  Coco Chanel never married and worked up until her death in 1971.  Her company lives on today and her name is synonymous worldwide to impeccable classical fashion.

Over the years, Chanel has been portrayed on the Broadway stage by Katherine Hepburn and on screen by Marie-France Pisier.  More recently films include the 2008 film Coco Avant Chanel starring Audrey Tatou, a Lifetime Channel movie where she was played by Shirley MacLaine and this summers release of Chanel & Stravinsky: The Secret Story which focuses on the love affair between Chanel, the pioneering designer and the avant-garde Russian composer Igor Stravinsky.    Be sure to check it out in theaters this summer.
